Hiring a private chef at home — how a memorable dinner comes together

More and more people celebrate at home rather than in a restaurant — and it’s easy to see why. When a chef comes to you, you get a restaurant-quality dinner in your own space, with no reservations and no watching the clock. Here’s a short guide to what hiring a private chef involves and how to prepare.

What a private chef does

I arrive a few hours before your guests. I bring the ingredients and specialist equipment, set up the kitchen, lay the table and prepare the evening’s courses. During the evening I serve each course in turn and recommend a wine for each. To finish, I make espresso and leave the kitchen spotless. All you have to do is enjoy.

Is my own kitchen enough?

Almost always, yes. A normal home stove and oven are perfectly sufficient — I bring any specialist equipment myself. For larger dinners of more than ten guests I ask about the kitchen in advance and bring a server when needed.

How do I prepare?

Essentially you don’t. Just tell me the number of guests, any allergies and your menu wishes. The table and tableware are yours — or I can arrange tableware through my partner. I take care of the rest.

What about price?

The price takes shape around the menu, ingredients, party size and location. The labour share qualifies for the Finnish household tax deduction, which makes a dinner at home a surprisingly sensible choice.
